Home was no longer safe.

One family made the difficult decision to leave a war-affected region, saying goodbye to their home, extended family, and everything familiar so their children could have a safer future.

Starting over was not easy. With one income supporting six people, the family was focused on meeting basic needs while helping their children adjust to a new country, a new community, and a new way of life.

Through financial assistance from the North Suburban YMCA, the children were able to attend camp and participate in programs that gave them the chance to simply be children again. They built confidence, formed friendships, and began to feel connected to the community around them.

For a family rebuilding from the ground up, the Y became more than a place to go. It became a place where they were welcomed, supported, and reminded that they did not have to navigate this new beginning alone.

Their story is one of courage, hope, and belonging—and a reminder that when a family arrives with little more than hope for something better, the Y is here to help them begin again.
