Retirement is something many people look forward to.

But once the busy schedules, meetings, and routines disappear, many older adults discover something they did not expect—loneliness.

Bonnie understands that feeling.

“When you retire,” she says, “you kind of have this open calendar.”

That changed when she found the North Suburban YMCA.

Today, Bonnie knows exactly where she will be on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. She fills her days with fitness classes, friendly conversations, and lunches with the friends she has made at the Y.

“It keeps me connected with things,” she says. “Otherwise, I’d be lonely.”

Those daily routines have become something much bigger than exercise. They have become a community.

Bonnie’s journey has also transformed her health. Since becoming active at the Y, she has lost more than 100 pounds, no longer needs medication for Type 2 diabetes, and has reduced the medication she takes for high blood pressure.

“Losing that weight enabled me to get off my Type 2 diabetes medications and reduce my blood pressure medications,” she shares proudly.

For Bonnie, the YMCA is not simply a place to work out. It is where she found friendship, purpose, better health, and a renewed sense of belonging.

Her story reminds us that growing older does not have to mean growing isolated. With the right community, every stage of life can be filled with connection, purpose, and joy.
