Asking for help is not easy.
For Winter, it took years.
Since 2022, she and her daughter, Autumn, had been weathering a storm. Like many families facing difficult circumstances, she tried to manage on her own before finally sharing her story with someone she trusted.
That conversation changed everything.
A caring professional at the school district listened, connected Winter with the North Suburban YMCA, and opened the door to new possibilities.
“Someone listened, someone cared, and everything changed,” Winter says.
The Y became more than a resource. It became a place where a family could begin again.
For Autumn, that meant discovering confidence in herself.
“Right when I walk through the doors, I feel that push of adrenaline,” she says. “I know I’m going to get something done today.”
Every visit leaves her feeling stronger.
“After I’m done with whatever I was going to do, I feel accomplished, and I’m thankful that I have this opportunity.”
Stories like Autumn and Winter’s are possible because of partnerships throughout the community. Together with local schools and service agencies, the YMCA helps ensure that when someone reaches out for help, there is somewhere to turn.
Sometimes the first step toward a brighter future is not solving every problem.
Sometimes it is knowing someone is willing to listen.
For Winter and Autumn, that first step led to hope, opportunity, and a community that believed in them.
