Everyone deserves a place where they feel welcome.
For one man experiencing homelessness, the North Suburban YMCA became that place. Through the Island in the Storm Membership, he has access to the Y at no cost—giving him a warm place during the winter, access to showers and wellness resources, and something equally important: community.
He visits the Y twice each day. Staff members know him by name, greet him when he arrives, and make sure he is treated with the same dignity and respect as every person who walks through the doors.
The YMCA cannot solve every challenge someone may be facing. But it can offer consistency. It can offer kindness. It can create a place where a person is welcomed for who they are—not defined by their circumstances.
Sometimes the greatest impact is not found in a grand gesture.
Sometimes it is opening the door. Offering a warm welcome. Creating a place where someone knows they belong.
