Every person deserves the chance to be included, build friendships, and discover what they are capable of.
For Melanie, the North Suburban YMCA has been that place.
Her mom has watched her grow from a spirited young girl into a confident young woman with leadership skills that extend far beyond the walls of the Y.
“Melanie has gone from being our firecracker and mischief manager into a person with leadership,” her mom shares. “These skills can now be applied in other areas of her life, like at her current job.”
That growth did not happen overnight.
It happened because the Y consistently created opportunities for Melanie to learn, participate, and succeed alongside others in an environment where she was encouraged every step of the way.
From adaptive swim lessons and dance performances to Hawks Special Needs High School Camp Camp and team-building activities, each experience helped Melanie build confidence while discovering new interests and abilities.
Just as importantly, she found something every person deserves—friendship.
Through the YMCA, Melanie has met people from different schools and communities. They celebrate birthdays together, go trick-or-treating together, and create friendships that extend well beyond scheduled programs.
“It’s helping build a community of friendships that we all should have,” her mom says.
When asked what she loves most about the Y, Melanie’s answer is simple.
“I like camp. I like swim class. I like games.”
For Melanie and so many others, the YMCA is more than a place to participate in programs.
It is a place where everyone is welcomed, encouraged, celebrated, and given the opportunity to belong.
