CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, AND TREATMENT
What is a bunion? It is a bony bump beneath the skin on the inner side of the foot. This deformity affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A bunion starts small, but over time it can grow to become very large and painful. Bunions are more common in women. The visible bump reflects changes in the bony framework of the front part of the foot. A bunion forms when your big toe points toward the second toe and causes the throws the bones out of alignment. Learn more about bunion risk factors, as well as symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options from Dr. Paul Goodman at Illinois Bone & Joint Institute.
